Croft Race Report

We knew we had pace in the car from testing, and qually produced a time good enough for the second row! A track limits violation meant we started p8.

We had an ok start to Race 1, tussling for position for the first few corners, before a double overtake on both close racing cars into tower. In the slipstream, we pounced again down the inside into sunny in, taking us up to p5 at the end of lap 1. Settling into the race we pulled in the lead pack and pumped in fastest lap after fastest lap - the Bromley motorsport crew had the car on rails! We diced with the lead group until the end, taking p4 on the road and the fastest lap.

A repeat of race 1 wasn’t on the cards - wheel spin off the line in the soaking wet conditions meant we were up against it from the off. Battling through the first few corners saw us take the escape road at the chicane as the space tightened, then into tower, no grip under braking saw us exit stage left. We managed to get going again, and a quick pitstop from the Bromley motorsport crew under safety car got us back out to finish the race!

A solid points haul and a very enjoyable weekend! Massive thanks to Josh and Tom for giving me a solid race car!

Pete Smiths makes strong finish to opening weekend

Pete Smith's Silverstone Race write up

A very wet qualifying saw the opening round of the Mazda MX5 clubman championship on the Silverstone International circuit with a somewhat jumbled up grid, with some of the expected faster drivers further down the grid, and usual midfield runners nearer the front.

Starting P12, the Bromley motorsport squad set max the purple MX5 up with a slightly more stable rear, in the hope that I could pull off some off-line sends on a drying track. Race 1 didn’t start off as planned, with the car bogging on launch, leaving me watching what felt like the whole grid fly past before turn 1. By turn 3 we were in P18 with a lot of work to do. I quickly found my groove and picked off the pack one by one, bringing the car home in P7 with the 3rd fastest lap.

Starting P7 and race 2, I managed a better initial launch, but a slow shift against me saw me position dropping down to P12 on lap 1. I got to work, pulling off moves on the inside of Abbey, the outside of Stowe, and every corner in between. The car was on rails! I got up to P5 by lap 6, but with a 5 second gap to the lead pack, that left a tall order. I managed to catch right up to the 3rd/4th place cars by the last corner of the last lap, and despite lapping within a 10th of the leaders, the gap was just a little bit too big. P5.

Through the ‘what could’ve beens’, and ‘if onlys’ that was a thoroughly enjoyable weekend. The work Josh has put into the car over the winter finally has it feeling handling as it should. We know we have the pace, the race craft is there, I just need to piece it all together ( I really need to sort out those race starts 😂). Roll on Snetterton in three weeks time…
